July 12, 2009: Tijuana River Beach and Mount Palomar (San Diego County, California)

Today I landed at the San Diego airport around noon and had some free time before getting ready for my ESRI conference. I met up with Mark Yacucci from Illinois and local birder BJ Stacy at Imperial Beach in San Diego for some birding along the Tijuana River Estuary. Here are some photos from that visit. We first made a quick stop at the end of 7th Street nearby:

Black-Necked Stilt
Black Skimmer

Now from Tijuana River Slough:
Elegant Tern
Gull-Billed Tern
Western Sandpiper
A view of Tijuana, Mexico (sports stadium)
Above and below: Flying Brown Pelicans

Least Tern
Piping Plover
Ruddy Turnstone
Semipalmated Plover
Double-Crested Cormorant
Marbled Godwit
A variety of shorebirds looking across the Tijauna River
Piping Plover
Gull Billed Tern

Next Mark Yacucci and I made a brief stop at Palomar Mountain, hoping for a Red Breasted Sapsucker. No such luck but we got a few photos ...

Acorn Woodpecker
Baby Common Moorhen
