March 9, 2007: Phoenix Area Birding (Encanto Park, Gilbert Water Ranch, Tres Rios, Rio Salado) (54 BIRD/ANIMAL PHOTOS, 5 SCENERY)

/wI started off the morning birding at Encanto Park again. More nice photos this morning. The first photo below is a nice shot of Enanto Park, near Amp Island. All of the same birds, but some really nice photos this morning.

ENCANTO PARK: Phoenix, Arizona

A cool domestic Muscovy dusk at the park.

I got four more Harris' Hawk photos this morning, though not as good as yesterday (Four photos below)

European Starling
I also got a few good Malalrd Duck photos this morning:

I was being watched!
Below are some photos of Gila Wodpecker

Some great Pied-Billed Grebe shots

Yet more nice Ring-Necked Ducked photos
Today at lunchtime I toook another trip to Gilbert Water Ranch....

Northern Pintails
White-Crowned Sparrow (above and below)
After class I headed to Avondale, to search for Ruddy Ground Doves at 121st and Southern. No luck, so from there, it was on to the Tres Rios area off Baseline and 91st. I did not stay long here, because I still wanted to hit Rio Salado, and Gilbert, and daylight was fading fast, because of slow going thanks to Phoenix area traffic!
Tres Rios had a lot of the same ducks as Gilbert, though they were at a greater distance. There seemed to also be more CINNAMON TEALS, and they had the MOORHEN. I thought I saw a GADWALL, but was not sure.'
TRES RIOS WETLANDS: Phoenix, Arizona

Common Moorhen (the only one seen on the trip)
What big feet you have!
Next stop was Rio Salado Park on Ellwood between East 7th and 16th (note: Not the Rio Salado Nature Preserve). I quickly found the BENDIRE'S THRASHER, along with some GAMBEL'S QUAIL

Next was a brief visit to the Rio Salado Natural area, which was very nice! Spent some time at the areas around both 7th street, and Central. There was a nice pair of REDHEAD ducks at 7th street, along with some YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, and VERDIN. At Central ave, more VERDIN, PIED-BILLED GREBES, and ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS, and MOURNING DOVES.

Flyover Double-Crested Cormorants
A nice pair of Redheads
Verdin
Pied-Billed Grebe
Now back to Gilbert for some quick birding before sunset! Didn't see a whole lot new, but lots of GREEN WINGED TEAL now, and less PINTAIL. Still lots of COOT, SHOVELERS, one pair of WOOD DUCK this time, LONG BILLED DOWITCHERS, LEAST SANPIPERS, and on land, the ANNAS HUMMINGBIRDS, CURVE BILLED THRASHER, GREAT TAILED GRACKLE, WHITE CROWNED SPARROW, and ABERTS TOWHEES dominated. Also good looks at BLACK CROWNED NIGHT HERONS before dusk, along with the GREAT and SNOWY EGRETS, and GREAT BLUE HERONS.
