July 10, 2006: Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons (6 PHOTOS, 2 BIRDS)

First thing this morning we visited the Jackson Visitor Center just north of town - great place to plan your visit to this area! We found a great hotel, right across the street called Wagon Wheel. I would defintiely reccomend this place, it was relatively cheap for Jackson (around $100), is almost walkable to town, but is set off the road enough so it was quiet. Rooms were also very nice, we reccomend it for sure!

We visited a great camera store, called Brodway Photo Center, on 130 W Broadway in the morning to address the camera issue. Even though they didn't have lenses for our camera, they spent a lot of time helping us out anyway, so I would reccomend this small business to anyone. Nice people. We did end up getting a new 400mm lens at D&D Camera in Jackson, also a nice place!

Morning activity included a visit to the Jackson Aerial Tram. We did this in the morning to avoid the afternoon thunderstorms. Rumors are that this may have closed since our visit, I'm not sure. Great views!

Below are some scenic view from the top of the Jackson Aerial Tram.

In the afternoon we toured galleries in downtown Jackson. Some of my favorites were the Thomas Mangelsen Images of Nature Gallery, and other galleries. Afterwards, we took a hike in the evening around the Death Canyon Trailhead. This is a nice area, and nice trail. Our search to see an owl failed, but we did HEAR a Great Grey Owl!

In the evening, we had a GREAT meal at a Thai Restaurant called "Thai Me Up". Possibly one of the best Thai dining experiences we have ever had!

BIRDING: The visitor center is north of town near the Elk Refuge. A visit there procuded VIOLET GREEN and TREE SWALLOWS, YELLOW HEADED BLACKBIRD, AMERICAN COOT, TRUMPETER SWAN, SANDHILL CRANE, and a variety of difficult to identify Eclipsed ducks. Some were MALLARDS and RING-NECKED DUCKS for sure. Also a few BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS were present here. On the Death Canyon Trail, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, WINTER WREN, STELLAR'S JAY, DARK-EYED JUNCO, and we heard GREAT GREY OWLS calling near dusk!
