July 5, 2007: Santa Fe, High Road Tour, Taos, New Mexico (16 PHOTOS, 2 BIRD)

Today we started in Santa Fe visiting the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, and the drove on the "High Road", a back road that runs from Santa Fe to Taos. It is named that because it is a bit higher elevation than the main road, and it goes through a number of cool small towns! After arriving in Taos, we checked into the Mabel Dodge Luhan House, a cool lodge that has been patronized by a number of famous artists. We got the Georgia O'Keefe room! (about Mabel Dodge Luhan). Dinner was at the delicious Guadalajara Grill. Afterwards we headed north out of Taos to the San Cristobal area and the DH Lawrence Ranch, which is also where Lawrence's final resting place is located. Along the way, we found a pair of Scissor Tailed Flycatchers, which turned out to be the first ever record in Taos County! Our sighting was mentioned in the American Birding Association "American Birding" newsletter under rare sightings! (Link) (Also mentioned in the New Mexico Rare Bird Report for July 8)
